Amazing stucco work at King's Dominion
The stucco was done here in the early 1970's. King's Dominion is a theme park in Doswell, Virginia.
Is it stone ? Fake stones were done in place by hand using 2 colors of integral colored portland cement mortar.
Multi colored Mexican villa has both painted
and colored cement mortar. Fine workmanship done in the 1970's is still in excellent condition today.
A system of gutters and downspouts protect the wall. Cement stucco should last
forever provided water doesn't get behind the wall.
Arches and decorative designs.
Top shows a painted dash on finish and bottom has a mashed potato type texture.
Stains around scuppers accent the fact that this is real stucco. Scuppers mimic New Mexico style "vigas".
Fake stone quoins are hand sculptured cement.
Niche was done in place with forms. Note cast stucco details at top. No styrofoam here. This stucco work was done in the early 70's.
Vaulted ceiling is on the money. Arches have a lace style texture.
A float finish with colored cement mortar.
Mountains were made with re-bar, diamond mesh metal lath and sprayed on cement mortar.
"Stone" seats were done from re-bar and metal lath.
Mud hut ? Cement mortar mud.
Stones on jack arch were hand done in place.
Fooled you, I bet. Stones are color cement mortar.
Base of stones is stucco, not precast concrete.
Corners are straight.

a wisk broom.
Heavy lace stucco.
Knock down texture.
The Tomb Raider ride is mostly synthetic, but still realistic. The picture shows casts and hand done stones.

Even pebble dash stucco ! Some of the plasterers who worked here were from Richmond (Virginia, of course) but I expect
the majority were from California. Large variety of textures, colors and finishes show off the flexibility of design and function of the material we work with.
