"Stucco and the Blind Man" Chapter 6

Plaster: about interior plaster

Ammended February 08, 2023

Stucco is a name for cement plaster, that is cement or lime (or other material) mortar applied mainly to the outside of a building, and in many cases to the inside of the building.

There seems to be little known these days about interior plaster. Interior plaster is also known as gypsum plaster, but lime plaster and mud plaster (clay soil and sand) and other materials for wall construction have been used over the years that have no gypsum at all. Plaster in this case refers to mortar applied to the wall, but not necessarily gypsum plaster.

Who could build a house like this ?

Stucco window sills in Washington, DC.
The plans show a gap left under the window for a sill to go under the drip edge of the window..
Leaking Windows on a stucco house.
Window was put in to leak and rot. No room for stucco on the bottom of the window, much less a sill or even room to angle the mortar. Most of the window openings on this house weren't wrapped with zip wall tape, as recommended by the manufacturer. The wall has a layer of foam stuck on the zip wall without wrapping the edges, so water runs down the window int the wall. Note on the plans the foam board is supposed to go inside the wall. This is supposed to have stucco put on with nothing to nail to around the sides and no way to stop water from running into the foam.
I guess you don't get much for 4.7 million dollars these days.
